Gone fishin

You are heading out to do some bass fishing on Claytor Lake. The boat coming in has just filled buckets with these fish. What is the family? Genus? Species? What species are you most likely to confuse this fish with? how will you reliable tell them apart?

It is Centrarchidae Pomoxis annularis. You can easily confuse it with Black crappie. The way to tell them apart is to measure the length of the dorsal and fin and the length of the eye to the start of the dorsal fin. If they are equal it is a black crappie, if they are not it is a white crappie.
