Beryciformes are very poorly understood and consists of about 16 families. This order has a wide variety of fishes; ranging from deep sea creatures such as the fangtooth and lanterneye fishes to the aquarium kept squirrelfishes.Little is known about the reproductive biology of the Beryciformes. They show no signs of being hermaphroditic; they are born and remain either male or female. Beryciform fishes are all believed to have external fertilization. They are all are also assumed to be non-guarding fish, most are pelagic spawners, that is, spawning aggregations are formed and the fish release eggs and sperm en masse directly into the water, and some are unknown.
Spawning may take place year round in some species, and peak reproduction rates vary among and within different families. For example, Anomalopidae (flashlight fish) experience their peak during the winter-early spring season. However, spawning frequency and time are still unknown in most Beryciformes.
